The Foundation of Our Faith

The time is now. The kingdom of God has come. Repent and believe this good news. Mark 1:15

This is the summary statement of what Jesus preached as he began his ministry. This person, this preacher, this builder, this "Word made flesh" is the foundation of our faith. And the heart of that foundation is that Jesus willingly and freely went to Jerusalem to face death on a cross. He did that for us, that our relationship with God could somehow be healed and restored.

This story of what Jesus did for us is told in the first four books of the Bible's New Testament, books entitled "gospels." This term means "good news." The good news is that God's interest in us is positive. God longs to be our friend and our God. And in Jesus God has made it possible for us to just that.

To better understand the details of this gospel story the Old Testament is studied. It provides insight and background into the actions and words of Jesus. To understand what this means for our day-to-day living we study the balance of the New Testament.

We come to this task much as the father of a very sick boy came to Jesus; with imperfect faith. That father's cry is ours: "I believe; help my unbelief!" (Mark 9:24) There's a lot we don't get right or understand all that well, but we keep trying. We confess when we're wrong and we keep working at living a life that better reflects the actions, beliefs and words of Jesus. We know this is a work of a lifetime.
