Evil is a powerful reality that actively seeks our destruction.
But God does not send us into the conflict unarmed.
He provides for us the very armor he himself wears. Wearing it is
the only way to face the onslaught of evil.
But you must put on the whole armor and do so before engaged against
evil.
Otherwise you are defenseless.
Paul, in describing the armor of God, uses the equipment worn by the
Roman soldier as his model. (Eph. 6:10-20):
- Belt - held everything together in a way that allowed for freedom
of movement. Truth functions in the same way, opposing the devil's
main weapon, falsehood.
- Breastplate - protects vital areas, namely our hearts. In Is.
59 this image is described as being love, faith and righteousness.
- Sandals - a major key to a Roman soldier's effectiveness. Provides
a foundation, endurance, sure-footedness and ready movement.
- Shield - Paul says this is faith, which enables us to extinguish
the Evil One's fiery darts.
- Helmet - symbolic of victory. Here refers to God's power and readiness
to save.
- Sword - The Word of God made alive by the Spirit.
- Prayer - reminds us that we are not fighting flesh and blood but
spiritual foes.
Make sure you put on God's armor before leaving. And be careful out
there. But know you are equipped by God to carry out his calling.
